Edinburgh library

Competition entry for the extension to the existing public library in Edinburgh, Scotland

Edphotonew1
Introduction

The proposed site is situated at the edge of Edinburgh old town, close to the Castle.

.

Basic setup

Our proposal is a simple corroded copper box which would keep and preserve books for future generations.

In the proposal, a very basic space frame forms a rigid structural skeleton.

This is enveloped by a simple glass cube which includes reading rooms, cafes and restaurants.

Drawings

The entire design is based on a very strict horizontal and vertical grid.

Six horizontal and six vertical lines divide the space into 36 identical squares (36sqm each).

The same grid is applied vertically, and inner squares form 6 levels for book storage. The outer squares create an open plan ground floor and an amphitheatre on the top floor.
